Eileen Ellsworth, President, Community Foundation for Northern Virginia:
With so many wonderful programs up and running in our region, Inova and the Community Foundation wanted to keep the momentum going. So in 2012 we announced a new awards opportunity– the annual “Let’s Move the Needle on Childhood Obesity Awards.”
Programs that are based in or sponsored by schools, nonprofits, faith based organizations, businesses, local government agencies, or other community based organizations in Northern Virginia were eligible to apply. A nominated program was judged on three criteria:
We decided to select three winners, each of whom will receive an award of $2,000 to help further grown and promote their programs. We also choose three runners – up, each of whom will also receive a cash award of $500 for their programs. The cash prizes for the winners were made possible by contributions from Inova and the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia, and the cash prizes for the runners – up were made possible by a grant from the Nishida Fund, a donor advised fund at the Community Foundation.
We collected 20 nominations and had a very difficult time selecting 6 finalists. Of those 6 finalists, three are winners. So now, I would like to call up the three runners up and ask you all to help me recognize them for their terrific programs. Then, I will call up the three winners to receive their award.

Mrs. Obama highlighted great progress being made in schools, towns and businesses across America. She also announced several new programs that will help families make healthier choices and will enable our kids to be more physically active, including a new MyPlate partnership that identifies recipes that meet USDA nutrition standards on the largest food sites on the web, and the launch of Let's Move Active Schools, which empowers schools to find free or low-cost ways to incorporate movement before, during, and after the school day. On Monday, March 4th at 11:10 a.m. ET, the celebration continued as the First Lady joins her first ever Google+ Hangout. Mrs. Obama participated in a completely virtual conversation from the Blue Room of the White House, speaking with families from around the country. The hangout was moderated by Kelly Ripa, co-host of LIVE with Kelly and Michael. Note: Video starts at minute 13.

The Weight of the Nation: http://theweightofthenation.hbo.com/
PART 3: Children in Crisis Childhood obesity is much more than a cosmetic concern. The health consequences of childhood obesity include greater risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma and other serious illnesses. The combination of these health effects and the dramatic increase in childhood obesity rates over the past three decades causes some experts to fear this may be the first generation of American children who will have a shorter life expectancy than their parents.
